OVERVIEW
If we spread awareness on the effects of toxic masculinity on women, then we can educate more people about how to help someone affected by it, because it's an important issue that we need to pay attention to. I think it is an important issue that we need to address because we need to solve the issue of toxic masculinity so that we can progress toward a safer, healthier future for all men, women, children, and others.
GOALS
BACKGROUND
I am researching and spreading awareness for the effects of toxic masculinity on women. Although the issue affects many such as men, women, children, the LGBTQ+ community, practically every human everywhere, I am going to focus specifically on its effects on women. I want to research this topic because I like exploring the psychological effects of a social issue and how that affects those around them. This issue resonates with me personally because I am also affected by men in my life who have fallen victim to this old masculine ideology.
This issue seems to develop for men at a young age, which leads them to then carry into their teenage years and the rest of their lives. For example, when we tell boys that they shouldn't cry, and it teaches them to suppress their emotions. This develops into something that not only imprisons them but it also hurts those around them.
It is problematic to women at any age and every age, whether that be an abusive father to his daughter and wife, or a man controlling their partner. Toxic masculinity causes domestic violence, abusive relationships and sexual assault, which in most cases women are the victims. “1 in 3 (35%) of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.” “1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime” I will be using websites to research and help spread awareness on how to help someone experiencing violence caused by toxic masculinity.
Some ways to help someone who is a victim of domestic abuse, and sexual assault are to provide emotional and material support. When providing emotional support it is important to acknowledge that their situation is difficult and complex, not speak poorly of their abuser, and to create a safety plan. A safety plan helps someone create a practical plan to improve your safety while experiencing abuse, preparing to leave an abusive situation, or after you leave. While providing material support you can help the person identify support networks, food, healthcare, and housing. You can also help them create a “to-go bag” in case of an emergency situation with important documents, and with their permission help them document instances of domestic violence. These are a few ways we can support someone who is suffering violence.
